Be Prepared ... For Summer Camp !

Troop 581 is making a triumphant return to Camp Ottari on the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation.  We have our largest contingent of summer campers yet, with 47 Scouts and 12 adult leaders currently registered.

Be Prepared:  check out the merit badge offerings, equipment list and other resources that are conveniently located on the Scoutlander event calendar.  Just log in, click on the event, and there you have it!

Getting to camp is half of the adventure.  This year we have a stop planned at the historic Virginia Military Institute.  Scouts will tour the grounds and museum then eat lunch in the shade with our guide.  The bus trip to camp is every bit of four hours, but we will have a great selection of adventure movies for your entertainment.  Please take note of the special list of items Scouts should bring with them on the bus to make their trip more enjoyable.

The Five Star Merit Badge Challenge awaits!  If you are one of those veteran summer campers who want a little extra incentive to finish up their requirements in camp, then this is the challenge for you.  Check out the Merit Badge Stuff web page for more details (look at the menu to the left under "Private Site").

You Could Have Been a Mountain Man!

and thrown tomahawks and knives, shot black powder rifles, stalked game, drank root beer, ate Buffalo, and generally lived like an 1840's Mountain Man!  Showers optional.  A crew of our mightiest, most fearless Scouts spent a week in the woods of far southwestern Virginny living off the bounty of the land (and the local Ordinary).  You want to be a part of this?  Then you start planning now and keep your powder dry until 2013!

UPDATE:  We are making a return trip to Camp Ottari in 2013.  In addition to slots available at Camp Ottari and the Claytor Lake Aquatics Base, we have sign-ups available NOW on the event calendar where YOU can reserve you spot at BRMC Mountain Man Camp!  You will be a short walk away from Lake Ottari and the rest of Troop 581, so you can be there for the big closing camp fire and the legendary OA tap-out at the Onion Ring.  SIGN UP  NOW!

Troop 581 + You = Outdoor Adventure

Troop 581 spends a LOT of time outside!

So far in 2012, Troop 581 Scouts whitewater rafted the New River Gorge, camped in every corner of Virginia, hiked through the George Washington National Forest, caught over 100 fish (and ate a lot of them), ate bugs, scuba-dived over a tropical reef, visited the Gettysburg National Military Park, earned over 300 merit badges, backpacked all over Philmont High Adventure Base in New Mexico, jumped in a lake, lived like Mountain Men, caught a shark, built a campfire that could be seen from space, surfed down giant sand dunes, led no less than ten service projects, rappelled off a tower, cooked (and ate) moose, led the largest Bull Run District camporee ever, sailed around the Bahamas, survived wilderness survival training and even did some camping in their own backyard.

To the left, you see an extremely rare, albeit grainy, photo of what are alledged to be Troop 581 Scouts sitting still.  The authenticity of this questionable image cannot be verified.  The stillness of Scouts in this image should in no way be construed as indicative of typical activity levels of Troop 581 Scouts.  In fact, we have one Scout who plays the bugle in his sleep.
